Before the galleries… Before the exhibitions… Before the travel… Before the art… There was a young boy learning to see the world differently.

Dwayne E. Brown was born and raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey. At age five, an accident took the vision in his left eye — a moment that altered his physical sight but not his creative gift. His early childhood drawings proved that imagination lived in him long before the accident. The accident changed the lens, but never the vision.

As he grew, art became both refuge and revelation. His formal study at Virginia Commonwealth University introduced him to the iconic minds of Cubism — Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Piet Mondrian. Their fragmented perspectives, abstract forms, and multiview interpretations deeply influenced his developing aesthetic. Cubism’s devotion to seeing beyond the obvious became the foundation for his emerging identity as both designer and artist.

After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, Dwayne built a successful career in the commercial office industry, specializing in spatial manipulation, design specification, and project management. Years of shaping environments sharpened his sensitivity to rhythm, pattern, depth, texture, color contrast, movement, and balance — instincts that would later become central to his fine art practice.

But creativity has a way of calling you home.

After years of designing interiors, Dwayne’s love for fine arts reignited. As a visually impaired artist conditioned to interpret the world through an altered lens, abstract work became a natural evolution. Cubism had already trained him to see multiple truths at once — and his lived experience gave him a heightened awareness of the subtleties most people overlook.

In 2023, two distinct careers — one in Commercial Interior Design and one in the corporate world of Wall Street — converged into a single vision: a deep appreciation for fine arts, design, travel, and culture. From that convergence, Brownstract Art Studio was born, founded by Dwayne E. Brown & Lori Joe Brown.

Brownstract is more than an art studio. It is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the beauty of seeing the world through a different lens.
